I got out on the snow this last weekend at Cascade Mountain in Portage, WI where I teach. We had a good amount of runs open and the snow was actually really, really good! There weren’t many people either, so not nearly as dangerous as I thought (since the opening weekend at a place can be somewhat dangerous with people skiing and boarding beyond their early season abilities).
During my first day on the job this season, I was able to give two private lessons. In one, I had a 4 year old girl and a 6 year old girl. They did well and I really liked how they worked on their stopping since only Schoolmarm was open – not Bunny or the Magic Carpet. In the second lesson, I had a 9 year old girl and we worked on her getting used to her new skis (which were much longer than her old ones) and her edging. She was also stopping faster by the end of the lesson.
I should be up there this next weekend – although I know I’ll be doing some training of the re-hires on Saturday and Sunday. I’ll be available for more private lessons if you request me.
Cascade reopens on Friday while they make a lot more snow, improve the already great conditions and get more trails/runs open.
